The article focuses on the literary genre roman à clef invented by fiction writer Madeleine de Scudéry. Topics discussed include Scudéry's second novel "Artamène, ou Le Grand Cyrus" which is considered as the first roman à clef, the use of the genre to represent an identity that was culturally marginal and the style and structure of the book "Ladies Almanack" by Djuna Barnes.
