- Abstract
This article studies the toll-like receptor-4 (TLR4) genotype in children with respiratory infections. Toll-like receptors constitute a distinct family of pattern recognition receptors mostly expressed on the cell surface of leukocytes that trigger cellular responses, including release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, after interaction with molecules of microbial origin. Respiratory-tract infections are one of the leading causes of morbidity among children <5 years old. The possible role of TLR4 in susceptibility to pneumonia in Italian patients with a history of recurrent infections was investigated.
