- Abstract
Notice the grey necrosis of three fingers of Saint Anthony (Detail view of the Temptation of Saint Anthony). gl The Antonite Order was dedicated to the treatment of patients who were ill, usually, those afflicted with skin disease, and specifically those victims of Saint Anthony's fire (ergotism).[[2], [4], [7]] The altarpiece was intended to contribute to the recovery of the sick by offering them comfort and consolation. Saint Anthony is here originally depicted as suffering from ergotism. It was hoped that Saint Anthony would intercede to obtain a miracle for the sick who prayed the Saint.[[1], [3]] The representation of those cutaneous conditions confirms the medical activity of the Antonites.
