- Abstract
Sufficient vegetable consumption helps reducing chronic diseases, unfortunately limited vegetables are being eaten. Introducing vegetables to four-month-old infants enhances taste preference development. Parents desire practical knowledge about how to introduce vegetables. Therefore, Vegetablebites-in-10-steps (V10) was developed, which is an information tool focused on vegetable introduction for parents that is applied during regular consultations by the Youth Health Care (YHC). Successful tool application requires an optimal balance between underlying tool principles and adaptation. The study objective is to explore how the tool is applied by YHC-professionals and parents at home in South Limburg. In 2021 ten YHC-professionals and ten parents were interviewed in a semi-structured manner. YHC-professionals mentioned that they gave the tool to almost all parents during their consultations; and that the tool supported their vegetable-introduction explanation. Most YHC-professionals indicated that they mentioned the main messages and some materials during the consultation. Most parents mentioned that they introduced vegetables at home according to the main messages, using some of the materials. YHC-professionals indicated that they adapted V10 explanation based on their own vegetable introduction experiences, parental characteristics (e.g., cultural differences) and the consultation setting (e.g., time). Parents indicated that they made V10 adaptations based on their child, family situation and their tool interpretation. Parents perceived V10 as a motivator and enabler to introduce vegetables among infants. V10 seemed valuable for YHC-professionals and parents to introduce vegetables among infants. Recommendations are made for YHC-professionals (including apply V10), the intervention developer (including suggestions for V10 optimalisation), and research (including an effect study).
