- Abstract
The article examines the perceptions and attitudes of students and teachers towards the use of non-German languages in Austrian schools. It is found that students perceive switching to another language in group work situations as inappropriate, while teachers have a more positive perception. It is recommended that the benefits of multilingualism should be emphasized more strongly. The present study examines teachers' attitudes towards students' multilingualism in Austria. It is found that a deficit-oriented attitude prevails and certain languages are attributed higher prestige. This leads to certain languages like English and French being preferred for instruction. Both monolingual German-speaking and multilingual teachers reject the use of other languages in the classroom, which can have a negative impact on students' linguistic competence. However, it is shown that the use of non-German languages in the classroom can have positive effects.
