- Title
GHOSTS IN A SUPER FLAT GLOBAL VILLAGE: GLOBALIZATION, SURREALISM, AND CONTEMPORARY JAPANESE HORROR FILMS.
- Authors
Lowenstein, Adam
- Abstract
An essay is presented which discusses how Japanese horror films and U.S. remakes of them reflect themes of globalization. The author contrasts views of media theorist Marshall McLuhan and artist Takashi Murakami regarding globalization. He suggests the motion picture "Ring," directed by Hideo Nakata, and its U.S. remake, "The Ring," depict connections between Japan and the U.S. through mass media. He comments on how Murakami's exhibition "Little Boy" depicts postwar Japan.
