Bergmann, Emilie L.
- Abstract
The essay examines the Education of the Virgin Mary in the iconography of Spain. St. Anne, a mother-daughter bond, and Christian representations are explored alongside the history of devotion in Seville, Spain. Essays by scholars Julia Kristeva and Luce Irigaray are highlighted for their illustrations of female learning and teaching. Images of St. Anne and the Virgin, including sculptures and altarpieces, are discussed while the author unpacks representations of the Virgin's intellect.
