- Abstract
The article looks at the development of sportsmanship in United States culture. The evolution of cultural norms related to sports competition is discussed. A duel between Andrew Jackson and Charles Dickinson in 1806 is recounted. The article discusses the impact of rules, etiquette, and skill on competition. Examples of sportsmanship from horse racing and football are provided. The role of sportsmanship in organized sports is mentioned.
