- Abstract
This paper presents the design of a cutting tool‐holding device with controlled oscillations without an external energy source based on a varying machining force, and an experimental analysis involving the influence on the chip shape, tool‐wear, chip volume coefficient, and surface roughness. The design of the cutting tool‐holding device is based on reducing the dynamic stiffness by allowing one degree of freedom of the cutting tool, either translationally or rotationally. This paper analyses the advantages of such a design, and provides experimental measurement results presenting the advantages of the concept of a partially movable tool holder without an external energy source for application in other machining operations.
