- Title
Bunyan and Augustine: A Possible Source?
- Authors
Parry, David
- Abstract
The article examines whether Saint Augustine, Bishop of Hippo, is a possible source for John Bunyan's treatise "The Holy City." "The Holy City" is an exposition of chapters 21 and 22 of the book of Revelation. According to Bunyan it has its origins in his preaching in prison. The author states that Bunyan's opening seems to parallel the beginning of Book I of Augustine's "De Doctrina Christiana," in which he, like Bunyan, expresses anxiety about his own ability to expound on the principles of the interpretation of the Bible.
