- Authors

- Abstract
The article discusses the development of negative constructions in later Middle English. The process from the unsupported negative "ne..." to "not" alone is described, exploring varying constructions in passive and finite verb phrases, subordinate clauses, and in conjunction with auxiliary verbs. Negative constructions in such texts as Richard Huloet's "Abecedarium Anglico-Latinum," Geoffrey Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales," and Chaucer's "Boece" are analyzed.
