- Abstract
The article reports on congenital heart defects as the leading cause of neonatal deaths in the U.S. A high incidence of preterm-neonatal deaths caused by congenital heart defects is seen in white mothers. However, for term infants, black mothers have shown a higher incidence of mortality rate than white mothers. It cites the need for further examination to relate neonatal deaths caused by congenital heart defects to racial differences of the mothers.
