- Abstract
Objective: To determine the demographic, clinical and topographic characteristics of keratoconus patients. Material and Method: Keratoconus patients were examined retrospectively, their clinical and topographical features were compared according to age group, gender and stage. Results: 540 eyes of 270 patients were included in the study. 43% of the patients were female, 57% were male and the mean age was 24,87 ± 8,68. Family history was present in 7% of the patients. According to the birthplaces, the highest and lowest rate was Southeastern Anatolia Region (29%), and Aegean Region (1%) respectively. 7.2% of the patients had unilateral keratoconus. According to the Amsler Krumeich classification, 49.5% of the patients were stage 1, 21.9% stage 2, 13.3% stage 3, and 15.3% stage 4. According to their topographic characteristics; cone types were 52% nipple, 34% oval, 14% globus; cone locations were 80% central, 19% paracentral, 1% peripheral; the most common topography patterns were round (34.8%), asymmetric bowtie with inferior steepening (23.4%) and an asymmetric bow-tie (13.4%). K1, K2, and Kmean values were higher in patients under 18 years of age than in patients over 40 years of age (p<0.001). In the analysis of the correlation of topographic indices with keratoconus stages, there was a statistically significant differences between the indices of elevation and aberrations and keratoconus stages (p<0.001). Conclusion: Keratoconus can be seen at different stages and rates according to age and gender, can be affected by ethnic and genetic features, and can have topographically different cone features.
