- Abstract
The presence of non-domiciled animals in urban areas is a worrying factor for public health, as their feces contaminated with pre-parasitic forms of enteroparasites can act as a means of transmitting various zoonoses, such as cutaneous larva migrans, visceral larva migrans, cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis. Given the above, the objective was to research the risk factors for the occurrence of gastrointestinal parasites in animals rescued and hosted by nongovernmental organizations in the municipalities of Araçatuba and Birigui, São Paulo. Fecal samples from 58 dogs and 75 cats were collected and processed using the Willis-Mollay and Hoffman, Pons e Janer techniques. The investigation of risk factors was carried out through the application of a questionnaire in the form of an interview. Thus, 52 (39,09%) of the animals were considered positive, identifying Ancylostoma spp., Cystoisospora spp., Toxocara spp. and Trichuris spp., respectively in 12 (66,6%), 2 (11,1%), 5 (27,7%) and 4 (22,2%) of the dogs. The presence of Ancylostoma spp. was also observed in 27 (79,41%) and Cystoisospora spp. in 13 (38,23%) of the cats. The Willis-Mollay technique was more effective in Ancylostoma spp. (74,35%) diagnosis in relation to the Hoffman, Pons and Janer technique (25,64%) in animals. Furthermore, it was the only one capable of identifying the genera Cystoisospora spp. and Trichuris spp. However, the Hoffman, Pons and Janer technique demonstrated greater success in diagnosing Toxocara spp. (80%) compared to the Willis-Mollay technique (20%). Data analysis consisted of interferential statistics (Fisher's Exact Test), to verify the association of risk factors with parasitic infections, in addition to the correlation between the aforementioned variables, with no significant difference observed. Through the results obtained, it is possible to verify the high prevalence of parasites, including those of a zoonotic nature, in animals rescued and sheltered in the municipalities of Araçatuba and Birigui, with the genera Ancylostoma and Cystoisospora being the most common in animals.
