- Abstract
Symphonic music by Gia Kancheli, who is regarded as the most oustanding Georgian composer of the 20th century, has still not received the resonance it deserves. Symphony no. 6 is a unique piece among his seven works representing that genre as it is somewhat of a synthesis and conclusion. It combines not only characteristic features of symphonic works by Kancheli but also the trends and aesthetics significant for the 1920s music. According to Mieczysław Tomaszewski, who looks at a musical work from a broad analytical and interpretative perspective, this composition is shown in the context of the spiritual, minimalist, film and theatrical music phenomena relevant for its understanding, and with reference to the categories of genre and the meaning carried by art. The article presents Kancheli’s typical composition strategies, such as the specific treatment of time in music (predilection for a slower pace, calming down and stopping), as well as the manner of arranging the musical texture (the idea of texture getting dense or transparent) and dramaturgy based on the dialectic of radical contrasts. Music material and its symbolic dimension is juxtaposed with the composer’s reflections and the opinions of scholars, audience and friends. The Symphony is looked at in the context of humanist, universal and spiritual values which the composer refers to in response to the “horror of history”.
