- Abstract
Thirty-six species of freshwater fishes from 20 families were recorded from the rice fields in Seberang Perai Tengah, Pulau Pinang. All the fishes were collected from various habitats including rivers, concrete canals, earth ditches, storm drains and rice plots whenever possible. Nine introduced species were recorded, Barbonymus gonionotus (Cyprinidae), Esomus metallicus (Cyprinidae), Gambusia affinis (Poecilidae), Amphilophus citrinellus (Cichlidae), Oreochromis niloticus (Cichlidae), Rhinogobius giurinus (Gobiidae), Trichopodus pectoralis (Osphronemidae), Clarias gariepinus (Clariidae) and Hypostomus plecostomus (Loricariidae). The emergence of fish species especially Amphilophus critrinellus and Rhinogobius giurinus in the rice fields has proven the introduced species may survive even in the most disturbed habitats. The higher number of species in the rice fields showed that this habitat is diverse with ichthyofauna and should be conserved and protected especially from the alien species.
