- Title
A distinctive irritant contact reaction to Vioform (clioquinol).
- Abstract
The article presents information on a distinctive irritant contact reaction to Vioform. Vioform was first used as a topical preparation at the Manchester Skin Hospital in 1949 and was combined with hydrocortisone as Vioform-hydrocortisone ointment in the 1950s. On occasions, a distinctive rash has been noted by the members of the medical and nursing staff; occurring only in patients treated with the Skin Hospital Vioform-hydrocortisone ointment. The appearance is of a deep-red to purple fine reticular eruption, associated with a mild to moderate degree of scaling. The areas affected produce mild burning or itching symptoms. The condition seems only to occur in hospital in-patients, in whom relatively large amounts of ointment are applied.
