The article discusses the relationship between 20th century poetry and literary theory, with particular focus given to the work of the poets John Ashbery and C. K. Williams. The themes of agency and subjectivity are examined, and poems including "As We Know" by Ashbery and "Farewell" by Williams are critiqued.
