- Title
Potential for Forest Tree Improvement via Tissue Culture.
- Authors
Karnosky, David F.
- Abstract
The article presents information on the use of tissue culture for forest tree improvement. It reports that demand for wood and wood products is expected to increase in the future due to the growing population and shortage of nonrenewable resources. It reports that forest management practices, such as prudent thinning program, short rotation forestry systems, planned reforestation and improved selective harvesting techniques are expected to increase productivity of commercial forests in the 50 years. It is noted that if propagation of conifers vegetatively through tissue culture techniques becomes possible, selected superior genotypes can be more easily used in tree improvement programs and in reforestation.
