The article discusses a case study which compared vertical and transverse incision for laparotomy of the lower abdomen. The study involved patients with rectal cancer who underwent low anterior resection (LAR) through a vertical or transverse incision at a hospital from March 1, 2009 to August 31, 2011. Results revealed that burst abdomen and incisional hernia were common in patients who underwent vertical incisions.
