- Abstract
This article presents the results of a clinical trial looking at the efficacy of hip protectors to prevent hip fractures in nursing home residents. The objective of the study was to determine if an energy-absorbing and energy-dispersing hip protector would reduce the risk of hip fracture among nursing home residents. The study concluded that it was unable to detect a protective effect on the risk of hip fracture despite good adherence to protocol. The results suggest that hip protectors, as they are designed, are not effective in preventing fractures in nursing home residents.
