- Abstract
The article discusses the controversy regarding patients with hepatitis C who want to become organ donors. While organs from donors infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV), such as hearts, carry an immense risk of virus transmission to the recipient, little is known about the effect during a transplant. The article also explores a study to determine exactly what the survival rate is among transplant patients with HCV infected hearts. Donor variables included age, sex, blood type, and cause of death. The study concluded that heart transplant recipients pose a greater risk of dying with infected donor hearts.
