- Title
Procalcitonin level-guided treatment reduced antibiotic use in exacerbations of COPD: COMMENTARY.
- Authors
Niewoehner, Dennis E.
- Abstract
The article comments on the identification of bacterial infections as commonly cause acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It was found out that inappropriate antibiotic use causes adverse drug events, and selects for resistant bacteria. The author noted that serum procalcitonin levels differentiate systemic bacterial infections from nonbacterial disorders.
