- Abstract
German television news, TV tabloid magazines and national newspapers present a distorted picture of violent crime. Under pressure from right-wing populists and so-called concerned citizens, editorial staffs increasingly mention the nationality of crime suspects - but usually only if they do not possess a German passport. This selection pattern is particularly pronounced in the case of knife attacks. This is proven through our long-term analysis conducted since 2007. Those who counter irrational fears with statistical findings face the accusation of being out of touch with life, as an exemplaric commentary analysis indicates.
