- Abstract
The experiment was carried out at the Field Crops Research Station, College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences, University of Baghdad in Jadiriyah, with the aim of evaluating the performance of partial diallel hybrids and inbred lines of maize and estimating hybrid vigor percentage. The experiment was carried out in two seasons, spring and fall 2020. Eight inbred lines of maize were used in the study (BI9/834, BSW18, LW/5 L8/844, ZA17W194, Z117W, ZI17W9, ZI7W4), numbered (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8), It was sowed in the spring season and entered into a cross-program according to a partial diallel crossing system to obtain twelve partially cross-hybrids and it was compared with its eight parents in a comparison experiment in the fall season using a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with split plots arrangement with three replication. The plant densities of 70 and 90 thousand plants ha-1 represented the mainplots, while the partial diallel hybrids and their parents represented the secondary plots. The performance of the parents and their single crosses (SC) was evaluated, as well as the estimation of the hybrid vigor percentage relative to the best parents. The results showed the following: Increasing the plant density led to a decrease in the diameter of the ear, the number of row grains, the number of grains of the row and the yield of the plant, but their effect was not significant in the two traits of the length of the ear and the number of rows. Parent 3 surpassed by giving the highest mean ear length, the number of rows, the number of grain row-1 and the number of ears (20.6 cm, 15.267 row ear-1, 39.13 grain row-1, 409.70grain ear-1), while parent 1 surpassed with the diameter of the ear, which reached 37.46 cm. As for the partial hybrids (1×6) had the highest ear length, the number of row grains and the number of the ear grains, which reached (21.26 cm, 40.267 grains row-1 and 493.25 grainsear-1), while the hybrid (1×5) gave the highest mean diameter of the ear which reached 43.07 As for the yield trait, the parent 5 superior by giving the highest yield of the plant reached to 122.43gm and it did not differ significantly from the parents 1, 3, 4 and 6, while the hybrid (1×6) was superior by giving it the highest yield of the plant reached to 154.367 and did not differ significantly from the hybrid (1×4). The ratios of hybrid vigor between negative and positive for the studied traits differed according to the plant density and the difference in partial hybrids. The highest hybrid vigor for the yield of the individual plant was the plant, the hybrid (4 × 7) reached 79.07% in the high density.
