- Abstract
The article discusses the use of bacteria known as probiotics to maintain the microbial balance of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) ecosystem. Topics discussed include some health benefits for several probiotics, modulation of the host immune system as one of the major modes of action of the probiotics, the importance of microbial balance in human intestine and the benefits of probiotics in various conditions including reducing the recurrence of bladder cancer.
