<em>The reception and influence of Josephus's's</em> Jewish War <em>in the late French Renaissance with special reference to the</em> Satyre Menippee1.
- Authors
Smith, Pauline M.; Mayer, C. A.
- Abstract
The article focuses on Flavius Josephus's book "The Jewish War." Almost alone among the major historians of antiquity, Josephus seems to have attracted scant attention from scholars working in the Renaissance period as distinct from the Middle Ages and in the French Renaissance in particular. This deficiency is amply confirmed by Louis Feldman in his magesterial survey of "Josephus and modern Scholarship" published in 1984. This article attempts to address one aspect of this deficiency by focusing on the exploitation of one text "The Jewish War", in the period of the French Wars of Religion.
