- Abstract
Due to increasing industrialization and urbanization, the use ofmetals and metalloids has accelerated. Manganese is no exception to that. Chemical activity ofmanganese, as known so far, show that it is a hard acid that would bind with a hard base. Studies on ligands preferences by metal ions confirm that Manganese forms ligands with carboxyl ,phosphate and nitrogen donars. Furthermore, it can express structural influences by affecting the equilibrium between native and reversible denatured proteins. But being a transition element it does not appear to be involved in redox reactions. This information is vital when its cellular effects are considered. However further studies on the formation of its metallo-protein might be useful in determining the mechanism ofmanganese toxicity.
