- Abstract
Optimal growth hormone (GH) production, secretion and function are essential for physiological human growth. Relevant assessment of growth hormone deficiency (GHD) is crucial for an early initiation of GH substitution aiming to improve body height and to prevent hypoglycemia and other consequences of GHD. However, even 60 years after the launch of first GH laboratory assay, diagnosis of GHD still faces technical and interpretational problems. GH stimulation tests are considered the golden standard to diagnose GHD, however their specificity is low, and therefore frequently generating false pathologic results. Therefore, diagnosis of GHD requires a complex evaluation of the patient history and auxological data on the background of stimulation testes, IGF-1 level, and of imaging methods and genetic testing in selected cases.
