ABSTRACT SESSION 32: PEDIATRIC II: PEDIATRIC ARRHYTHMIAS AND PACING.
- Abstract
This article presents several research papers related to pediatric arrhythmias and pacing. The research paper "A Missense Mutation in the Pore Region of HERG Causes Familial Long QT Syndrome," by D. Woodrow Benson and Calum A. MacRae reports that long QT syndrome (LQTS) is an inherited disorder that predisposes individuals to syncope and sudden death. Researchers evaluated a family with autosomal dominant inheritance of LQTS and found a mutation in HERG, a voltage gated potassium channel expressed in heart. The other research paper "Identification of Viral Causes for Ventricular Arrhythmias in Children Using Polymerase Chain Reaction Analysis," by Arnold Fenrich and Frank Cecchin describes that ventricular tachycardia (VT) is rare in children without structural heart disease and often a cause is not established. The purpose of this study was to evaluate children with VT for the presence of viral genome using polymerase chain reaction.
