- Title
AN INCONSISTENT TRUTH: CANADIAN FOREIGN POLICY AND THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE.
- Authors
Kennair, John
- Abstract
The article discusses on the control of the Northwest Passage and Canada's foreign policy. It presents the two schools of thought for solving the dispute. The first thought holds that the waterway is an international strait and that Canada should negotiate political means on its human and environmental security concerns. The second position contends that the waterway is part of the territorial waters of Canada and is under its control. Possible outcomes include Canada's assertion of its exclusive claim, a compromise solution in which Canada assent that the waterway is international however Canada maintains their control and influence in these waters and for Canada to lose all rights and claims with the jurisdiction resting on the international community.
