- Abstract
Leakage modeling can be crucial for environmental management and control of waste landfills. However, defining boundary conditions for these models can be difficult, especially in absence of primary monitoring data. Thus, this work proposes methodological steps to characterize and estimate probable concentrations of representative chemicals in landfill leachates to enable the simulation of the transport of contaminants for landfills where there are no monitoring data available. The paper presents a case study in which real leachate monitoring data were used to estimate source term concentrations. Criteria for the selection of representative chemicals were proposed based on data analysis and environmental and health risks related to the chemicals. A statistically robust procedure to estimate reference values for the concentration of selected contaminants were provided. In the study case, a total of 25 chemicals monitored in a non-hazardous landfill were identified as representative substances in leachate. The proposed method can be applied to establish the source term for models using primary or secondary data and also can be used to guide other crucial management actions, such as the design of leachate treatment plants or the elaboration of monitoring plans.
