Ecology: Destabilized fish stocks.

- Abstract
The article discusses the impact of extensive fluctuations of harvested fish stocks in the U.S. Such reduction is disadvantageous to the economy as well as the fishing communities. It is harmful from a conservation perspective as high variability may increase the probability of extinction. Studies show that increased variations of harvested fish stocks are caused by the selective removal of the larger and older fishes, thus leading to the decreasing average size and age of fish that destabilizes the population dynamic.
