- Abstract
The article discusses the philosophy and the mission of national bioethics commissions. It states that bioethics commissions contribute to the construction of a stable societal consensus on biomedical ethical issues through their reflections and recommendations. Information on what consensus is and the social role it plays are provided. It also discourses whether bioethics commissions can make a consensus, what the commissions seek when pursuing consensus, and whether consensus are rational.
