Brewer, David A.
- Abstract
An essay is presented on the tactile aspects of authorial names in 18th-century English literature. Particular focus is given to authors John Cleland, Charles Churchill, Isaac Teale, and Laurence Sterne. According to the author, reading authors' names as marks of their physical touch or presence can help scholars to understand 18th-century concepts of authorship. Topics discussed include reputation, printing technology, and the practice of hand-writing authors' names into printed books.
