- Title
The Return to the Fairy-Tale: Contemporary Niche Novels.
- Authors
DROBOT, Irina-Ana
- Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to outline a few features of the niche literature we find that is popular today: fantasy novels, such as the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer, Bitten by Kelley Armstrong and romantic novels, such as Northanger Abbey by Val McDermid, and novels by Alexander McCall Smith, Amanda Quick and Nora Roberts. Romantic novels are promoted by Romanian newspapers and the series where the heroine changes into a werewolf or vampire are a clear fascination among contemporary readers. Vianu (2012) explains that fairy-tales were there before Modernism. Modernism disrupted plot and lost many readers, who still prefer traditional stories. Do these contemporary niche novels return to fairy-tales or simply to favourite plots from the past?
