Tragedy in the Time of Plague.
- Authors
TAPLIN, OLIVER
- Abstract
The article looks at the outbreak of plague between 430 and 426 BCE in Athens and its effects on the cultural and artistic life of the city. It discusses that the theatrical performances went on with little or no notion of contagion, and huge gatherings were not postponed. It mentions the theatrical event "City Festival of Dionysus," held over several days in spring. The plague affected the Theatre of Dionysus in two waves, and each wave is discernible in the language of the plays.
