- Abstract
This article examines the mechanism of central nervous resetting of baroreceptor reflexes. The concept that bulbar centres subserve reflex control of the circulation, while suprapontine mechanisms are concerned with higher autonomic functions, is no longer tenable. Recent analysis in unanaesthetized animals of the reflex cardiovascular and respiratory responses to hypoxia and to the noxious vapours has provided unequivocal evidence that the suprapontine centres can normally participate in reflex responses.
