- Abstract
Aim: This study was conducted to determine postpartum physical symptoms severity and breastfeeding behavior according to primipar mothers birth type. Methods: This descriptive and comparative study was conducted through January-June 2018 in three training research hospital in Izmir. The study was conducted with 227 mothers in two groups (113 vaginal birth and 114 caesarean birth). Data were collected using the Individual Identification Form, Postpartum Physical Symptom Severity Scale and LATCH Breastfeeding Assessment Scale. Results: It was determined that mothers who gave birth by cesarean section had low breastfeeding success and experienced more severe physical symptoms in the postpartum period (p<0.05). In addition, it was found that the breastfeeding success of the mothers who gave birth with both forms of birth decreased the symptom severity experienced during the postpartum period (p <0.05). Conclusion: Nurses should encourage mothers to participate in the birth preparation classes during their pregnancy and encourage vaginal delivery and breastfeeding. They should also plan nursing care to support breastfeeding, taking into account the symptoms they may experience in the postpartum period for mothers who give birth by cesarean section.
