- Title
Depressed, withdrawn parents may affect adjustment of children in divorced families.
- Authors
Wood, Jeffrey J.
- Abstract
The article cites a study, published in the journal "Child Psychiatry and Human Development," which suggests that depressive maternal symptoms and withdrawn parenting may be factors in the heightened adjustment problems faced by pre-adolescent children in divorced families versus those in non-divorced families. In this study, cross-sectional contrasts revealed that divorced mothers rated their children as displaying significantly greater internalizing and externalizing behaviors than did nondivorced mothers on the Child Behavior Checklist at all three yearly assessments.
