- Abstract
Introduction: Juvenile delinquency is characterized by multiple risk factors, including behavioral, emotional and cognitive. However, it also appears that young which turned into delinquents, are associated with significant changes in neuropsychological level that may interfere with their normal development. Objectives: With this exploratory study, we are trying to find some neuropsychological characteristics in teenagers which turned into delinquents and were accomplishing a tutelary measure in an Educational Center, in Oporto. We also tried to analyze the existence of significant intra-test and inter-teste partial correlations in the neuropsychological evaluation exams used in this study and also the existence of significant differences between the socio-demographical variables according to the results from the tests that are used. Method: It was analyzed a sample made by 31 teenagers, who were in the Educational Center. To evaluate some possible changes it was used a battery of neuropsychological tests, among them were Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (Wechsler, 2003), Rey's Complex Figure (Rey, 1988), Stroop - Color and Word Test (Golden,2007), TRVB - Revised Visual Retention Test from Benton (Benton, 2002) and the WCST - Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (Heaton, Chelune, Talley, Kay and Curtiss, 2001). Results: The results obtained through this sample, not applicable to the whole universe of young institutionalised delinquents, suggest neuropsychological adjustments concerning to memory, executive functions, verbal functions and attention functions. It was also verified the existence of significant intra-test and inter-test partial correlations. As for the socio-demographical variables, it was not found any statistical relevant difference in the tests results. Conclusion: This study allowed us to identify some neuropsychological changes which were part of the characteristics from delinquent teenagers and the existence of risk factors to delinquency in this sample.
