- Abstract
The European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS) has had a positive impact on non-European Union (EU) cardiac surgery training programs. Non-EU residents in training benefit from the educational resources, training courses, and standardized protocols offered by EACTS. The EACTS Academy provides various training courses and webinars, with a significant number of non-EU participants. The Francis Fontan Fund (FFF) supports international exchange programs and fellowships, allowing non-EU residents to develop specialized skills and gain exposure to different healthcare systems. The FFF also provides support to trainees facing difficulties, such as the Ukrainian Support Fellowship during the Russian-Ukrainian War. The FFF and the Thoracic Surgery Foundation sponsor a yearly international travelling fellowship in partnership with the Latin American Association of Cardiac and Endovascular Surgery, promoting the growth and development of cardio-thoracic surgeons in Latin America. The number of non-EU awardees of FFF fellowships has been increasing over the years. EACTS has also launched a donation portal for the FFF to support the education of future cardio-thoracic surgeons.
