- Abstract
Abstract--The rising incidence of co-authorship in economics has been well documented. This study builds on earlier work by using less aggregate data to test various hypotheses about the causes of this rise. Evidence presented here provides corroboration for the hypothesis that increasing opportunities for specialization have arisen in economics, leading to an increase in co-authorship. We also find strong evidence supporting two other causes--the increasing opportunity cost of time and the rising incentive to diversify against the uncertainty of the editorial review process. The evidence presented here does not support the hypothesis that increased co-authorship has arisen in response to higher quality standards as a result of increased competition for journal space.
