San Diego's Zuniga Shoals Jetty: Icon and Enigma.
- Authors
Martin, John
- Abstract
The article discusses how actor John Wayne discovered the obstruction was a crumbling breakwater the federal government constructed at the turn of the 20th century with a name and provenance unfamiliar to him called the Zuniga Shoals Jetty in 1969 in San Diego, California. It reports that the 1849 harbor chart of Andrew Gray and those of Major Alexander D. Bache who surveyed the bay for the U. S. Coast & Geodetic Survey in 1851 and 1853, labeled the shoal at the harbor entry as Zuniga.
