Iran under Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

- Abstract
When Mohammad Khatami became Iranian president in 1997, dogmatic religious rhetoric was replaced by flirting with Western democratic vocabulary. The agenda was rationality not theology. With the election of Ahmadinejad, however, a revitalised ideology arose like a phoenix from the ashes of the 1979 Revolution. The fact that support from the Bassij groups like Ansar-e Hezbollah and above all Pasdaran helped to decide the election has created a fear of a more militaristic Iranian society. We can now confirm that the closer approach to the citadels of power of the military and paramilitary organisations has made Iran more difficult for the West to handle.
