- Abstract
This article presents a report on the case of a 59-year-old man with an unusual appearance of a common skin tumor. The man was admitted to the hospital for fine needle aspiration of a skin nodule on the right shoulder that had gradually increased in size. The clinical features suggested that it was likely to be a squamous carcinoma or a metastatic lesion. The cytological findings initially suggested an anaplastic tumor of the skin with pleomorphic epithelioid cells. The case demonstrated that the great variability of morphological features of malignant melanoma, which may represent a challenge for the pathologist in cytological and histological specimens, particularly in the absence of a suitable immunocytochemical panel.
