- Title
Resources for Solitude: Proper Self-Sufficiency in Jane Austen.
- Authors
Tate, Margaret Watkins
- Abstract
This article presents a literary criticism of the characters of several Jane Austen novels and their depiction of socially hazardous virtues. The characters of Emma Woodhouse, Anne Elliot, and Elinor Dashwood are examined in relation to their struggles with isolation. The author suggests that the additional virtue of self-sufficiency is necessary to understand and overcome the challenges of potentially self-destructive social virtues.
