- Abstract
Phonological awareness is a predictive factor in successful reading acquisition, influenced by several factors. Many children in kindergarten receive speech and language therapy due to articulation or language disorders. The aim of the present study was to analyze how speech therapy affects phonological awareness and its three levels (rhyme, syllable, and phoneme awareness) of five- and six-year-old kindergarteners with or without speech sound disorders. Results show better achievement in all levels of phonological awareness in cases of those who received speech therapy development. Examining the interaction between speech sound disorders and speech therapy, we found that all children with speech articulation disorders aged five- and six-years, who received speech therapy performed better in all levels of phonological awareness than those, who have articulation disorders, but who had not received speech therapy. Among the groups of children with clear speech, children who received speech therapy development performed better in all levels of phonological awareness than those who did not receive speech therapy development. Overall, the best performance was achieved by those children, who did not have articulation disorder but nevertheless received speech therapy development. The weakest performance was achieved by those children who have speech sound disorders but did not receive speech therapy. The study's results suggest that it would be important for all children to receive speech therapy development, not just children with speech sound disorders, especially in kindergarten, the year before elementary school. This development can lay the foundation for successful written language acquisition.
