The article provides a comparison of amateur astronomy in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand during the critical period 1850-1935. It provides a brief biography of the individual that the author regards as the country's foremost amateur astronomer. It comments on other key elements in the evolution of amateur astronomy, such as the emergence of formal astronomical groups and societies, efforts made to popularize astronomy and key amateur telescope-making initiatives.
