- Abstract
Meningococci are capsular bacteria that cause invasive infections with a high mortality rate. The incidence is highest in the youngest age groups. Due to the possible staggering course and a narrow, several-hours therapeutic window, parents' vigilance is of great importance. This article presents the case of a seven-month-old infant, who reported to the Emergency Department in a fairly good general condition. Initially diagnosed with a viral gastrointestinal infection, they were admitted to the ward only due to the fear of the mother. After a few hours of hospitalization, the condition of the infant worsened, invasive meningococcal disease was suspected and appropriate treatment was immediately applied, thanks to which the infection was successfully managed without permanent consequences. The role of the mother whose anxiety over the health of the child caused admission to the hospital was emphasized, which in effect enabled immediate life-saving measures. The role of vaccination as the only way to effectively protect against meningococcal infections was discussed.
